And We Danced

Hey All. So the other night, I took that dance class that I said I was going to. Oh man was it fun!

When I was driving to the studio I was extremely nervous.  I felt like a little kid in a candy shop that was about to jump out of their skin. I wanted to scream! I was anticipating the excitement and the nerves of taking a class for the first time in about 14 years or so. YIKES! (but yeah I danced in a show about 9/10 years ago.

Anyways, I pulled up to that studio and was excited beyond what I can explain. The young dancer in me was about to jump out of my body.  My sister-in-law was joining me and we walked into the studio together. The lobby was beautiful and we went up to the desk area. We told them we were there for a jazz class. We were asked to take our shoes off and leave them in a cubby in the lobby. Then we walked back the hallway to see some of the dance studios. We watched a tap class take place and it brought me back to my dancing days years ago.

Soon, it was our time to dance. We went into the studio and although it felt strange it also felt familiar. The mirrors. The barre. And then it was time to stretch. I stretched like I hadn’t stretched in a long time. My body had no idea what I was doing nor did it want to know. I didn’t push myself but it definitely was different for me. We switched gears a bit and did some moves across the floor. A little step kick, step side kick, step back kick, step ball change. Or whatever you want to call it. But again, it was familiar. Then some step ball change into passe hold (or turn). I tried to turn, but it was hard. By the time I was done doing a few of those I was getting the hang of it, but it was like I was starting from scratch. We did some isolations with our arms and our hips. Some of this was coming back to me, and I loved it. It wasn’t easy, but it was coming to me.

Next, they had started a routine so we got to learn some. Now that’s what was fun. I love being able to dance a routine. My body was ready for it, but not ready. There were some things that seemed like they would be ok, but by the end of it, my knee sort of hurt. I did push anything, but as mentioned earlier, my body wasn’t used to this. So my knee was probably all out of shape from doing things that it hadn’t done in years. But man was it fun! That’s what I miss the most – doing routines.

It was a fun group of ladies and I will definitely go back and take another class sometime! Pretty sure my sister in law will too. 🙂
